Talks between Zambia and New Zealand on 6 September concluded with a renewed commitment to joint action in tourism, conservation, and eco-investment.

Delegates focused on promoting cultural ties, expanding sustainable tourism initiatives, and improving protections for visitors in wildlife destinations.

Balancing Tourism Growth with Conservation Priorities

Zambia is rolling out eco-lodges, community conservancies, and nature-based enterprises aimed at protecting natural resources while boosting tourism. Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba stressed the importance of safety after a wildlife-related fatality involving a New Zealand visitor.

He emphasised “the need to strengthen visitor safety measures and ensure that tourists are provided with necessary information to safely interact with the wildlife in Zambia’s many game parks and protected areas.”

New Zealand’s Backing for Zambia’s Conservation Efforts

New Zealand officials pledged support for Zambia’s conservation programmes, including strategies to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

Ambassador James Hewitt noted the partnership aims to balance “the preservation of wildlife and the protection of tourist safety.” Both governments agreed to implement improved visitor management practices and expand initiatives that safeguard wildlife.

Eco-Investment Opportunities and Cultural Exchange

The talks also addressed eco-investment opportunities, with New Zealand offering expertise and funding to accelerate Zambia’s tourism growth. Cultural exchanges will be strengthened through joint tourism programmes and events designed to promote mutual learning and collaboration.

Officials emphasised Zambia’s potential to become a leading eco-tourism destination in Africa, supported by sustainable partnerships and community participation.
