Auckland Museum may face a reduction of up to 30 roles as it faces financial challenges.

Its financial year projections show a 10% drop in visitation compared to targets, leading to a decrease in expected revenues of at least $2 million.

The combined impact of expected revenue declines over the next three years is projected to cause a total revenue shortfall of $5.8 million compared to planned budgets.

“In addition to current challenging economic conditions, the unplanned closure of the museum due to the discovery of asbestos earlier this year has resulted in decreased income, to a level that is no longer sustainable. We also face significant and ongoing costs for asbestos remediation,” chief executive David Reeves said.

The identification and removal of asbestos interrupted public programmes and restricted access to important galleries. While the total expense of asbestos remediation remains uncertain, it could possibly surpass $10 million.

Visitor numbers have also been affected by a decline in international tourists across the country.

The potential changes could lead to a reduction of up to 30 roles in the museum. However, there are approximately 14 roles that are currently vacant.

“The review aims to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the museum while continuing to provide great visitor experiences and services,” Reeves said.

“It’s important that we respond to the situation and make sure we are in a position to recover well when conditions improve.”
