Nokia has introduced the first commercial 5G radio solution tailored to railway networks, supporting the global adoption of FRMCS.
The system is intended to supersede the legacy GSM-R standard, which has long been the backbone of rail communications. The solution enhances network performance, reliability, and scalability. Rail operators are beginning migration plans as the industry prepares for a 2G phase-out.
Cloud-Native 5G Solution Driving Rail Modernisation
Nokia’s new 5G solution operates in the 1900 MHz (n101) band and is designed to run alongside GSM-R, ensuring continuity for existing rail networks.
The cloud-native 5G standalone (SA) system is modular and scalable, suitable for both regional and national rail lines. It is specifically tailored to enhance automation, improve safety, and elevate passenger services without operational disruption.
“Our commercial 5G solution reflects Nokia’s long-standing commitment to railway innovation and modernisation. As rail operators face increasing demands for digitalisation, high-speed data and enhanced safety, this technology provides the foundation for a new era of rail transport that is efficient, sustainable and passenger-focused.” Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said.
Digitalisation Advocating Operational Efficiency and Sustainability
Nokia highlights its 5G platform as a means to improve both sustainability and operational performance. Digitalisation can cut inefficiencies, enhance cybersecurity, and support greener, smarter transport systems. Operators can expect cost-effective automation, more dependable networks, and improved passenger services.
The approach emphasises practical efficiency, security, and competitiveness, delivering measurable outcomes over symbolic initiatives.
Compliance and Collaboration for Deployment
Nokia’s railway solution integrates its AirScale 5G radio portfolio and Core Enterprise Solution, ensuring compliance with industry cybersecurity standards.
The real-world testing will take place under the EU-funded FP2-MORANE-2 project, a major initiative to accelerate Europe’s digital railway transformation. Nokia’s commercial 5G launch represents a systematic, secure, and scalable upgrade for global railways with GSM-R approaching obsolescence.
