New Zealand’s music sector is preparing for the 2026 round of the Industry Internship Programme, confirmed today by the NZ Music Commission.

The initiative places emerging professionals with Host Organisations, offering practical training and industry exposure. Applications for hosts opened today and must be submitted by 5pm, Friday, 3 October. Intern applications are expected to open in late October.

Proven Track Record in Workforce Development

The internship scheme has been operating since 2018 and is now established as a key pathway into the industry.

Interns have worked across recording, events, venues, PR, and publishing. According to the Commission, it is designed “to help emerging music professionals and recent tertiary graduates gain experience and kick-start their careers in the music sector.”

Two-Way Value for Hosts and Interns

Host Organisations mentor the interns during their placement, providing training and networks. The Commission emphasises that businesses also benefit: interns bring “a fresh perspective as well as knowing they are lifting up the next generation of music industry professionals.”

This partnership approach ensures both sides gain value — young workers acquire skills and opportunities, while industry players contribute to building a stronger workforce.

The 2026 round is set to continue an initiative that connects education with employment, with intern applications opening later in October, while reinforcing the sustainability of New Zealand’s music ecosystem.
