Forté Health has begun construction on an expansion in Christchurch that will increase its bed capacity threefold and almost double its theatre space.
The privately owned business is investing at least $60 million in the project, which is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2027. The facility is developed jointly by Forté Health Ltd and property partners NHL and Mainland Capital.
The 6000 m² facility will be linked to the current hospital and feature four additional operating theatres, 39 new beds, and a special care unit designed to accommodate complex and extended surgeries, including joint replacements, bariatric, and cancer procedures.
Michael Woodhouse, chief executive of Forté Health, said the new hospital facility is being constructed to meet the growing demand from surgeons and patients alike.
“The expansion will further enhance Canterbury’s position as a significant hub for private healthcare services, with the enhanced facility expected to attract patients from across the South Island.”
Woodhouse mentioned that the project will stimulate Canterbury’s construction industry and create opportunities to expand nursing and allied health staff, including the launch of a graduate nursing programme.
“The foundation works were contracted separately, with the process of selecting the main contractor well under way.
“That tender will close in early October, after which the successful tenderer will commence on site from mid-November.”
