Google has extended its AI-powered search feature, AI Mode, to include five new languages—Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese—after being available only in English since its debut. This expansion allows more users worldwide to ask complex questions in their native languages.

Launched in March as an experiment for Google One AI Premium subscribers in the U.S., AI Mode uses a customised version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, which supports multimodal inputs and sophisticated reasoning. It competes with AI search services like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search.

Following a rollout in August to 180 additional markets in English, Google has now broadened language support. Hema Budaraju, vice president of product management at Google Search, said, “With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply.”

Google recently added agentic features allowing AI Mode to make restaurant bookings, with plans to support local services and event ticket purchases. These are currently exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., a premium tier costing $249.99 per month.

AI Mode is accessible as a tab on search results and a button in the search bar, and Google is reportedly working to make it the default search experience soon, according to Google DeepMind’s Logan Kilpatrick.

Although some critics say AI search features may reduce website traffic, Google has firmly denied this, stressing that the technology is meant to complement existing web content. As competition heats up with rivals like Microsoft Bing integrating AI chatbots, Google is investing heavily in multilingual, intelligent search tools.
