Today is the last day to collect points on Flybuys.
One of the country’s longest-running loyalty schemes, which started in September 1996, is set to conclude on December 31, 2024.
Lizzy Ryley, the chief executive of Loyalty NZ, which manages Flybuys, noted that the loyalty scheme landscape is evolving rapidly. Businesses now have enhanced access to technology, allowing them to develop their own tailored loyalty programs.
Flybuys made several adjustments in 2020 to better attract younger consumers. The revamped program provides members with a wider array of rewards, including New World Dollars and fuel discounts. But these enhancements were insufficient to retain Flybuys’ relevance in a competitive market.
“We are committed to doing right by our members through this process, by giving them lots of notice and every opportunity to spend or donate their reaming points,” Ryley said.
A marketing expert from Massey University remarked that Flybuys was a “trailblazer” at the time of its launch. However, “retailers have probably come to realise they might be better off running their own loyalty schemes exclusive to them rather than to Flybuys.”
Loyalty NZ has confirmed that customers can continue to earn Flybuys points until 11:59 p.m. on October 31, and they will have until 11:59 p.m. on December 31 to redeem any remaining points.
