NZBizBuySell, the independent business-for-sale platform operating since 2000, has been sold to Bizstats. The Christchurch-based site, along with NZFranchises and AUBizBuySell, will now operate under the business data company’s ownership.

Founder Richard O’Brien said Bizstats owner Matt Stevenson approached him with the acquisition proposal.

Two Decades of Expansion Culminate in Strategic Sale

NZBizBuySell has grown into New Zealand’s largest independent business-for-sale listing platform, with buyers, sellers, franchisors, and brokers using it nationwide. The deal also brings NZFranchises and AUBizBuySell under Bizstats’ control, expanding its trans-Tasman market reach.

From Dial-Up to Data-Driven: 25 Years of Industry Evolution

O’Brien noted the dramatic transformation of the industry since the early days. “Not many businesses can boast 25 years online. We’ve gone from dial-up internet and fax machines to embedded AI tools and a fully cloud-based service accessible from your phone,” he said.

“Adaptation and innovation have been key in building this highly effective and credible platform.”

He described the sale as a natural next step after years of growth: “It’s great to pass the ball to someone with the vision, enthusiasm and skills – and who is New Zealand based – to take things to the next stage.”

Acquisition Process and Market Integration

The acquisition came about when Bizstats owner Matt Stevenson approached O’Brien with the idea of joining forces. Bizstats is recognised as New Zealand’s market leader in business sales data, a resource that will now be integrated into NZBizBuySell’s widely used listing services.

O’Brien, who will now focus on other ventures including the commercial property platform NZcommercial.co.nz, expressed confidence in the transition.

“After 25 years building this highly successful platform, it’s time to focus on other projects,” he said.

Building a Stronger Business Marketplace

Stevenson believes the merger will create significant benefits for all participants in the market. “Merging Bizstats’ market-leading data with NZBizBuySell’s extensive reach creates a powerful offering for business buyers, sellers, and brokers,” he said.

“We’re excited to build on Richard’s legacy and NZBizBuySell’s deeply established and trusted market position.”

The message is continuity with added value for customers. Both companies have assured that the high level of service, exposure, and tools clients are accustomed to will remain, now enhanced by Bizstats’ detailed market insights.

Industry Consolidation and Future Outlook

The acquisition of NZBizBuySell is seen as a sign of consolidation sweeping through online marketplaces and data service providers. Mergers in the sector aim to unite content, reach, and analytics under one offering.

“We’re proud to have helped pioneer and shape what today’s business listing marketplace looks like in New Zealand. We look forward to continuing to work with you and to offering an even broader range of services.” O’Brien said.
