Think Solar Group has been recognised as one of New Zealand’s leading solar businesses, named runner-up in the best large business category at the Sustainable Energy Association New Zealand (SEANZ) awards.
From Electrician to Solar Entrepreneur
Mr Dunning, originally from England, trained as an electrician and dreamed of living in Wānaka, though he once thought it impossible. After working in Franz Josef, a stint in Australia, and time in Christchurch after the earthquakes, he eventually settled in Wānaka.
“He could not believe how sunny it was in the town and how few solar panels there were.” That observation inspired him to study renewable technology through SIT by distance while working as an electrician.
Building a High-Growth Solar Business
He launched Wānaka Solar in 2016, which grew into Think Solar Group, now operating in Wānaka, Queenstown, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Nelson.
A turning point came in 2020 when he met UK solar professional Paul Hollingsworth. “Having someone over there made it take off,” Mr Dunning said of the Queenstown expansion.
Future plans include a new branch in Timaru later this year and an Invercargill office next year.
“There’s lots to learn but we are really keen to train people up,” Mr Dunning said.
